What’s Lakes ‘n’ Knödel?
Lakes ‘n’ Knödel is an unsupported bikepacking event in the german-speaking alps, connecting the beauty between Fuschl am See and the area close by Lake Constance. The route will bring the participants to remote huts, using logging roads, forest paths and trails. The rural paths and terrain beside some hike-a-bike sections with the longer finishing time, the great infrastructure of hotels, guesthouses and accommodation is inviting for rookies, as well as lots of options to refuel. The route is “not the rookie-thing”, it’s all parameters.
The numbers speak for themselves, that you have to be tenacious. What’s the format?
The track which will be provided is a set route with three Checkpoints. So all participants have to follow the given Route and in case of unexpected incidents (woodworks, road closings, etc.) you can leave the track, but have to return to the track via the shortest possible way.
What defines unsupported?
Unsupported entails, that you are “on your own”. Help and support can be used, once it’s equally available to everyone. For example with a mechanical issue, no other participant should help you. Go for the nearest bikeshop, fix it and get back on track. Bring your tools and spare parts, which can be necessary. Likewise pre booking of accommodation for your trip, prior to the start, is prohibited. Due to restrictions regarding bivvying/camping in Austria, you won’t be as free as possible, as you have to plan your nights on Austrian soil. But we will help you a little. Details at §8.
Categories?
Traditionally there are two categories. Lakes ‘n’ Knödel is about cycling, community and the taste of the alps. A traditional dish called “Knödel Tris/Trio” leads us to a third category. Riding as a triplet and enjoying the adventure with another.
Drafting?
We will have fast first finishers, but we’d like to open the doors for rookies and if drafting is supportive to some, that’s ok to us. We’d like to promote a community ride, get together with likeminded, chat and have a good time. So it's on you to ride side by side and enjoy nature along the course. If you prefer not to talk and look onto each others buttocks, feel free to do so.
Still “drafting” needs some knowledge and abilities, so stay safe and communicative, in case you don’t feel comfortable drafting, or being drafted.Food, Beverage and Accommodations?
Lakes ‘n’ Knödel will lead you along several mountain huts, with the opportunity to drink, eat and lots of times also sleep (pre booking, once you started, is adviced). You will have to plan your adventure in advance, but there are plenty opportunities to resupply, either with fountains, huts or little villages. For the huts we will provide a contact list, short before the event.
Likewise we’d like to give you an insight of what’s the rule for sleeping/camping along the track. To make it easy, we put up this easy to “remember rules”.Camping in Austria: Camping in the parts we are crossing is prohibited. That includes the opportunity to bivvy.
Camping in Bavaria: Its permitted to rest and sleep outside, unless you are not putting up a tent.
We know, that its part of the community to “bivvy” and sleep outside, but also we need to respect the laws, the landlords, nature and its animals.
Checkpoints
After a neutral start, we will have three Checkpoints, which will part the track in 4 sections. The second Checkpoint will be around half way point.
What is their specialty?
All will feature beautiful members of our team and serving you a refueling tasty Knödel (free of charge). Likewise, we will reserve a certain amount of beds in a dorm, so participants who’d like to have a break/sleep/rest, can recover (Expenses are incurred.).Do I get details about the GPX Track?
We will finalize the entire track until the event week and it’s part of the game to keep some surprising loops until the event. Prior to the event, we will keep you updated and give you teasers along the way. Lean back and look forward to a surprising second edition of Lakes ‘n’ Knödel.
Setup?
Referring to the participants of the premier, there was a party saying, would have been great to have used an MTB, others went with love for the gravel. We will stick with the course and scout with a gravelbike with the following tire and gear transmission ratio.
Tire widths: 45mm
Gear Ratio: 40x46 with a 175mm crank.
THIS IS OUR LOWEST RECOMENDATION. YOU WILL BE YOUR OWN KING/QUEEN!
Likewise you will need front- and backlights as well as a spare set of lights is pretty helpful.
A reflective vest for night rides is advisable. Besides the lights, the helmet is mandatory.
(On your head - not on the bags or handlebar).
