Whats the format?
The track which will be provided is a set route with three Checkpoints. So all participants have to follow the given Route and in case of unexpected incidents (woodworks, road closings, etc.) you can leave the track, but have to return to the track via the shortest possible way.
What Defines Unsupported?
“ Unsupported” means you are “on your own”. Help and support can be used, once they’re equally available to everyone. For example, with a mechanical issue, no other participant should help you. Go for the nearest bike shop, fix it, and get back on track. Bring your tools and spare parts, which may be necessary. Likewise, pre-booking accommodation for your trip before the start is prohibited. Since bivouacking and camping is restricted in Austria and Germany, you’ll need to plan your overnight stays in Austria and Germany, which limits flexibility a bit. We’ll help you with the planning; more information will follow.
Categories
Traditionally there are two categories. Lakes ‘n’ Knödel is about cycling, community and the taste of the alps. A traditional dish called “Knödel Tris/Trio” leads us to a third category. Riding as a triplet and enjoying the adventure with another.
Drafting
We will have fast first finishers, but we’d like to open the doors for rookies and if drafting is supportive to some, that’s ok to us. We’d like to promote a community ride, get together with likeminded, chat and have a good time. So it’s on you to ride side by side and enjoy nature along the course. If you prefer not to talk and look onto each others buttocks, feel free to do so.
Still “drafting” needs some knowledge and abilities, so stay safe and communicative, in case you don’t feel comfortable drafting, or being drafted.
Food, Beverage and Accommodations
Lakes ‘n’ Knödel will lead you along several mountain huts, with the opportunity to drink, eat, and lots of times also sleep (pre-booking, once you start riding, is advised). You will have to plan your adventure, but there are plenty of opportunities to resupply, either with fountains, huts, or little villages. For the huts, we will provide a contact list shortly before the event.
Likewise, we’d like to give you an insight into the rules for sleeping/camping along the track.
Camping in Bavaria & Austria: Wild camping / Bivouacking is prohibited. That includes the opportunity to bivvy.
We know that it’s part of the community to “bivvy” and sleep outside, but we have to respect the laws, the landlords, nature, and its animals.
Checkpoints
After a neutral start, we will have three Checkpoints, which will part the track in 4 sections. The second Checkpoint will be around half way point.
What is their specialty?
All will feature beautiful members of our team and serving you a refueling tasty Knödel (free of charge). Likewise, we will reserve a certain amount of beds in a dorm, so participants who’d like to have a break/sleep/rest, can recover (Expenses are incurred).
Do I get details about the gpx track?
We will finalise the entire track by the event week, and it’s part of the game to keep some surprising loops until the event. Before the event, we will keep you updated and give you teasers along the way. Lean back and look forward to a surprising third edition of Lakes ‘n’ Knödel.
Set up
Referring to the participants of the premier, there was a party saying, it would have been great to have used an MTB, others chose the gravel bike. We will stick with the course and scout with a gravel bike with the following tire and gear transmission ratio.
Tire widths: 45mm
Gear Ratio: 40×46 with a 175mm crank.
THIS IS OUR LOWEST RECOMMENDATION.
You will be your own Queen or King!
Likewise, you will need front- and backlights as well as a spare set of lights is pretty helpful.
A reflective vest for night rides is advisable. Besides the lights, the helmet is mandatory.
(On your head – not on the bags or handlebar).
